 "HEADED SOUTH" Bluegrass Band

In 2015, three music buddies from the Washington, D.C./ Maryland area HEADED SOUTH to St. Augustine, Florida. There they met a great home grown Florida bass player and, in January 2016, the HEADED SOUTH Bluegrass Band was born. With decades of bluegrass music experience under their belts, the group is becoming known for their tight harmonies, driving instrumental work and interesting repertoire, which borrows from other genres but “keeps it bluegrass.”

On lead vocals and guitar is Lynn Healey, who grew up singing bluegrass with her family in Washington, D.C. By the late 1970s, she was arranging vocal harmonies and performing professionally with area bands. An award-winning vocalist (Rocky Mount, VA and Galax, VA) and dynamic bluegrass rhythm guitarist, she has led vocal and guitar workshops and was a faculty member at the prestigious Augusta Heritage Center in 2016. She has played with many Washington area bands over the years, including Patent Pending, Orange Line Special, Blue Moon Cowgirls, and the Rockledge Bluegrass Band.

Bob Tice keeps it rolling on the banjo. For more than 40 years, he played with Maryland bands such as Charlie Thompson and Bottom County Bluegrass, Patent Pending, and the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition, with whom he toured Ireland on five occasions. He has also taught private banjo lessons for many years.

Sue Raines Tice began her fiddling career with the Buffalo Gals of upstate New York, a band that was active on the bluegrass festival circuit in the early 1970s. She also played with Eddie and Martha Adcock and the Second Generation, Don Stover, Leon Morris, and Liz Meyer. After taking off from music to raise four musical children, including guitarist Jordan Tice, she rejoined the local music scene, primarily with the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition, but also as an in-demand side person and studio musician.

Barb Johnson’s energetic style and rock-solid bass playing are well-known in Florida bluegrass circles. Currently living in McIntosh, Florida, Barb has traveled far and wide playing bluegrass, folk, swing, rock, country, and even a brief foray into punk! Band credits include One Way Ticket, Morning Sky, Dirt Road, Santa Fe, Blue Angel, Sno Rogers, Back Water, Boulware and Stewart, and the Red and Chris Henry All Star Band.

Together, HEADED SOUTH Bluegrass Band has been entertaining and touching the hearts of an ever widening audience. They look forward to bringing their music to you.

Jonah Riddle & Carolina Express

Carolina Express was formed by brothers Jonah and Grayson Riddle. Jonah is 17, and Grayson is 12. Growing up in the mountains of western North Carolina, Jonah has been playing the banjo for 4 and ½ years. From the first time he picked up the instrument, he fell in love. He started out playing at church three times a week. Because he enjoys bluegrass and gospel music so much, he decided to start his own band – Jonah Riddle & Carolina Express. Jonah’s brother, Grayson, plays guitar and does vocals. He has been playing guitar for almost 2 years. From the time he was only 5 years old, he would pick the guitar at church services. Jonah and Grayson credit the Lord for their playing and singing talent. Their dad, Benjie Riddle, plays the upright bass.

Jonah and Grayson have had the privilege of picking on stage with many great artists: Doyle Lawson, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Balsam Range, Ralph Stanley II, Nu Blue, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Crowe, and Kody Norris. They have performed at many concerts and venues across the country, including: The Ryman Auditorium Courtyard, Dollywood, the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, Woodsongs, the Lyric Theatre in Kentucky, Houstonfest, the Orchard at Altapass, the North Carolina State Bluegrass Festival, Bluegrass First Class in Asheville, North Carolina, the Earl Scruggs Center, the Pickin’ Porch, the Museum of Appalachia, the Carter Fold and the World-Renown WDVX Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, TN.  Jonah and Grayson are also members of Tomorrow’s Bluegrass Stars and have performed at IBMA Kids on Bluegrass in Raleigh, North Carolina. They have won several awards during the time they have been performing such as Best of Show and individual awards for playing their instruments as well.

Jonah is currently endorsed by Deering Banjos, GHS Strings and Peterson tuners. Jonah and Grayson give God all of the credit for the wonderful opportunities that He allows them to have.

BLAST OF GRASS

Still Going Strong

NFBA Spotlights North Florida’s longest running bluegrass band with the freshest sound.

Danny Lanier-mandolin vocal, Justin Lanier-guitar, lead vocal,

Ricky Ray- banjo, vocal, Page Clark-dobro, vocal, Platt Drew-bass

When the name Blast of Grass is mentioned, it's hard to find someone that has not seen them or heard them before. That is probably because they have been together, going strong and holding the longest tenure as a band in north east Florida and possibly the entire state of Florida. Affiliated with NFBA since the 70's, this group has been entertaining audiences at festivals, fairs and private events representing bluegrass like it should be. NFBA is obviously an organization that promotes bluegrass and this group makes it easy for people to gravitate to our beloved music.

Mandolin and singer Danny Lanier says “We've known each other most of our lives. Me and Page (and sometimes Little Justin ) played for Southland Bluegrass Express, Platt played for Shotgun Bluegarass and Ricky was in W. Va. We all kind of gave up pickin to raising families, then in the Sping of 1997, Danny Taylor had a pick-in at St. Augustine. Danny, Justin and Platt were reunited. The next month we put together a group with Page and Donnie Wynn at the Wright brothers Pickin, it was then we knew we something magical!

When asked how they have stayed together so long, they simply say “we have no leader, we're all best of friends, more like family, but Danny handles the business, Justin handles the song selection and sound, Ricky and Page writes the few songs we have and Platt is the roadie”

The result is hard driving, high energy, wide variety and a smiling audience. We are proud to have them as an affiliated band wand look forward to their appearances.

Most memorable moments for the band were answered John McCain's Presidential Rally at the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Jacksonville, FL

Incase you’re wondering, we asked in all that time, what were you most embarrassing moments? Platt Drew and Danny Lanier both say without hesitation, “you can’t embarrass us”.. So there you have it. Now go out and see this group for yourself, you’ll be glad you did.

NFBA would like to thank them for their support for all of the years they have performed promoted and supported us.
